Self-reflection is necessary for personal growth. As I had hoped, my visit to Takoma Park [the site where the traumatic experience happened] brought me closer to the roots of my depression. But no traumatic memories surfaced that had not already seeped through my flesh in the sweat of a hard night’s sleep. Healing is about much more than remembering. Healing is about reinterpreting events, aligning the fiction with the fact. I had created so many lies to erase my misfortunes and my mistakes. The biggest and most damaging of which were my silences.
